Happy Birthday Superman

If you didn't know (and until today, I didn't know, so if you feel bad, don't), today, February 29th, is Superman's birthday. A big Superman fan I know was having a get-together tonight to celebrate and I couldn't attend so I figured I would, at the very least, post something here on the blog, especially since I've been silent on here for roughly two months. I wish I could have been there to celebrate big blue but in lieu of actually being there and debating whether or not the New 52 Superman is better or worse than the previous incarnation, I did do something Superman related today; I picked up the first season of the 1950s television show The Adventures of Superman on DVD for $10. A little less camraderie involved, sure, but I did my part. I'll probably watch an episode or two and maybe some features before bed, I'm sure.

Happy Belated Birthday, Bob Burden!

I sort of missed this one a few days back but one of my very favourite funny book people, Bob Burden, just had a birthday and I wanted to give a proper Meanwhile... shout out to him. Anyone who has been buying/reading comics for the last few years should know about his wacky creation, the Flaming Carrot, and the crazy surrealist joy that his characters have brought to many a fan (this one included).

One of my favourite stories involving Bob came from an interview we did a few years back where he outlined what he would do if he was allowed to work on some Marvel heroes. This was a period where editor Axel Alonso was bringing in talent like Peter Milligan, Jim Mahfood, Mike Allred, and a number of names nobody could have predicted would work on a Marvel book. It had something to do with Iron Man and Dr. Doom, a beach and someone's vacation being ruined. It sounded like a winner in my book.

Anyway, Bob turned 57 on July 19th, so Happy Birthday, Bob!

Later!

Happy Belated Birthday, Jean Giraud!

Jean 'Moebius' Giraud turned 71 years young on May 8th. I've loved this guys work for so many years and do not have nearly enough of it in my collection. I'll have to remedy that sometime soon.

Raise a glass for Jean.

Cheers!

Meanwhile... Birthday Shout-Out

I was cruising over at The Comics Reporter earlier this evening when I noticed that the 27th of January was the birth date of one Stefan Petrucha. Stefan has always been a favourite writer of mine from way back in the day. I still have a lot of fondness for Meta-4, his X-Files comic book work (which still stands as one of the best licensed comics I've ever seen and introduced an unknowing public to the artwork of Charles "Walking Dead" Adlard), Squalor (which lives again as Petrucha's Time Tripper book series) and the only Nexus story not done by Baron and the Dude that holds up for me, Nexus: The Liberator.

He's also done a lot of prose and YA work and his most recent novel, The Rule of Won is out there and getting great reviews from all over. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

So, a very happy Meanwhile... 50th birthday shout-out to Stefan. For many years of good reading and many more to come!

Cheers!
